Description:
As in 2008, a questionnaire was issued to a sample of Level 3 learners towards the end of their course. The questionnaires were circulated to participating FECs and HEIs delivering animal-related courses in the Central and North-West regions. The final sample was restricted to participants aged 21 years and under who were on National Diploma courses, and comprised 144 learners from 5 institutions.
Outcomes:
A comparison with last year’s data showed that 51% of respondents were aiming to progress to HE, compared to 38% in 2008. This demonstrates a significant increase.
Some of this increase is likely to be due to the positive effect of Vetnet LLN on learners’ progression aims via established links between FECs and HEIs and enhanced IAG, taster days etc. There may be other contributing factors too: closer examination of the data revealed that the 2009 participants have slightly (but significant) higher GCSE profiles on entry to their ND course, which might impact on their long term aims. Whether this increase is part of a general pattern is not clear: it will be interesting to explore next year’s data to see if the trend continues.
