Priorities and principles of the Engineering workstrand, agreed at the first meeting, 22 March 2007
FUTURE MEETINGS
Details about the next workshop will be added soon.
SUMMARY OF TOPICS RAISED AND PROPOSALS FOR FURTHER WORK
1) To support and influence work which reinforces and develops mathematical skills and understanding for vocational, mature and non-traditional learners. The group recognises that this is essential in making progression to higher learning in engineering a reality for these groups.
2) To improve the balance, clarity and consistency of national marketing promoting engineering as a study and career choice.
3) To change the nature and quality of information, advice and guidance (IAG) offered to learners. Assist practitioners in better managing learners’ expectations of learning opportunities in further and higher education.
It was agreed that a focus on Progression Agreements was required and several examples tabled at the second meeting, the consensus being that the MOVE model proved simple and effective and worthwhile adopting as a template. The Sector Skills Council for the sector, SEMTA, should be invited to the October meeting to discuss its role within LLNs and other related initiatives, including the New Diploma in Engineering with special reference to the Maths content. A speaker representing Engineering in Schools for South Yorkshire has also been invited to the October meeting to give a Diploma update.
Future developments:
Seek HEFCE funding to carry out LMI research into destinations of Learners. Also to carry out curriculum development needs/alignment between FE and HE Collaboration with other LLNs regarding best practice and initiatives.
